After it was all over, Morgan gently withdrew. Sparrow winced a little, and Justin tucked her into his side as Morgan discarded the condom into a trash can near the bed. She was a little sore, but it had been worth it. “Wow,” she murmured, snuggling. “What was that?”

Morgan settled behind her, throwing a leg over hers and stroking Justin’s arm where it lay across her waist. “Bonding. Making love.”

She smiled. “I don’t understand how a biological mating imperative can override everything.” She shifted, hugging her men closer. “Not that I’m complaining.”

Morgan hugged her back, then sighed. “Most people don’t know this, but bonding isn’t just a naturally occurring spontaneous mutation.”

Sparrow frowned. “What do you mean?”

Justin went still. “It was a military program, wasn’t it?”

Morgan nodded. “Yeah. When I became president, I had a lot of top-secret information thrown at me all at once.”

Sparrow shifted so that she could see Morgan’s face. “What does that have to do with the bonding heat?”

He smiled crookedly. “Everything.” He lifted a hand and swung it out, as though to encompass the world. “The military developed a drug that was supposed to be a soldier-enhancer. It didn’t work. The soldiers just got sick, and then the drug mutated via the virus they’d used to administer it. When that happened, it spread. It was basically a cold that everyone in the entire world got.” He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “It was a rogue project from the beginning.”

Sparrow didn’t understand. “I don’t remember everyone getting a cold at the same time.”

Justin grimaced. “I bet that’s because no one even really noticed, right? I mean, people get colds all the time. And it takes a while to spread through the population.”

“Exactly.” Morgan nodded. “The virus infected everyone, and it caused a very specific mutation in our DNA when a massive solar flare delivered just the right kind of radiation to our lovely planet about a decade ago. Voila, bonding began.”

“Whoa,” Sparrow murmured. “Why didn’t I hear about this?”

Morgan raised an eyebrow.

“Right, like our government is going to admit that a rogue project created bonding.” Justin snorted.

Sparrow could see his point.

“Anyway, then another illegal project came out of nowhere and began trying to enhance soldiers again, this time using ’Path. That’s where that stupid drug came from.” Morgan suddenly looked much older than his forty-one years. “The people responsible for that are dead, and most of the distribution of the drug is no longer centralized, but it will never really go away.”

Sparrow put a hand to his face in compassion. “This is not your fault.”

He shrugged.

“It’s not. You didn’t begin this.” Justin leaned over Sparrow and grabbed Morgan behind the neck, drawing him down. They hugged him together for a moment, then Morgan drew back.

“I’m worried that we’re constantly going to be fighting new evil, all because of this one project. That’s why Chicago and Las Vegas were attacked, you know. Sean and his bond-mates killed the main supplier of ’Path. The
